The movie represents a situation in which the veracity of the story does not matter. ![]() “Big Fish” is one of the movies in which a narrative and a character merge into a single entity, thus, creating a surreal environment to keep the audience invested. Although the narrative of “Big Fish” is tied intrinsically to the character arch of the two main protagonists and blurs the line between diegetic and non-diegetic elements, it still helps the narrative develop, thus, becoming inseparable from it. Nevertheless, the two concepts are connected inseparably in the movie. The fact that most of the narrative elements exist in an entirely different reality than the one in which the rest of the movie takes place makes the distinction between the narrative and narration in “Big Fish” even more evident. “Big Fish” is particularly interesting in this regard since it is intertwined with the identity of the main character. Therefore, novels such as “Big Fish” by Daniel Wallace tend to pose a challenge to movie directors, not because of the lack of interesting visuals, but due to the unique purpose that narration serves in the story. A film is a visual medium, which makes an adaptation of a vignette of stories rather difficult to implement. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() In my teens, in addition to being a rabid comic reader, I was also a fanatical video hirer… so much so that my local video shop ended up HIRING me!! The movies that I loved the most were the slasher films, and whilst discussing this with a man at a local second hand book shop, he told me if I liked ‘those’ sorts of films, I’d love the books of Richard Laymon, and he sold me a $1.50 of a book called ‘Beware!!’ and I was immediately hooked. … until I discovered a gentleman by the name of Richard Laymon. Sure as a younger kid I had read adventure stuff like Doctor Who, the Famous Five and Secret Seven, and of course movie novelizations like Raiders of the Lost Ark or Star Wars, but I was always more interested in the monthly tales of Daredevil and the Fantastic Four, or being totally engrossed in the latest Famous Monsters of Filmland, or if I was lucky, the gory pics in a new mag known as Fangoria… As a teen in the eighties, just like now, I was always more of a comic and magazine reader than a book reader. ![]() ![]() This last bastion of civilization has made its final stand. Wait, you HAVEN’T read Tollbooth? Here, drop everything and read it IMMEDIATELY.” But in our family, one of the first middle-school books assigned has traditionally been James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small. In middle school, we still kept the readalouds (in part because I was unwilling to give up my favorite part of the day), but we added another element: Each month or so, Mom would choose a book for the middle schooler to read and then write a mini-book report on. From the beginning, our homeschool has revolved around books. In preschool and kindergarten, that meant an after-breakfast readaloud (maybe My Father’s Dragon) followed by a little bit of phonics, handwriting, and math, topped off with a myths-and-legends readaloud, and then the day would end with a readaloud selection of favorite picture books. That schedule evolved with us through elementary school, as we moved up to Oz and The Odyssey, Harry Potter and Robin Hood. ![]() ![]() Studies in the Demographic History of Roman Italy, 225 BC-AD 100.
